Junior School Pastoral Care

Outstanding pastoral support contributes to the happiness of Bradford Grammar Junior School pupils, creating a positive, friendly atmosphere for all. We work closely with parents to ensure each child receives the best possible pastoral care during their time at BGS.

Our children become part of the BGS family the minute they join Clock House.

While our pupils excel academically, they can only achieve their best if they feel nurtured, respected, safe, and heard. Our thoughtful and insightful teachers get to know our pupils incredibly well and form strong bonds so they can be trusted guides.

We work with our school nurse and with parents, and are quick to respond if children need additional support.

Before our children start their new school, current pupils send postcards to their home, introducing themselves and letting them know how excited they are to meet them. We have Stay and Play introductory sessions for our little learners in Reception and Induction Days for older children, where we can observe who they play with and who they might appreciate as a ‘Buddy’.

Our Buddy system means no child is ever alone when they start. Buddies work hard to show new pupils around the school, take them for lunch and be their friend in the playground and the classroom. Many become best friends for life!

We have a wonderful Nurture Space filled with comfy cushions and mindful activities which is a place our pupils can go to if they are feeling overwhelmed or just want some quiet time.

Our older children also play a huge part in our pastoral provision, whether it’s as Play Leaders – where they support younger children in the playground and organise games – Wellbeing Champions or as Reading Ambassadors for our Year 2s.

“Being a buddy makes me happy”

David is a Reading Ambassador and was a Buddy for another Year 6 pupil, Kit, when he joined the school. Find out why he loves reading to the younger children and why he appreciated having a buddy.
