One of Bradford Grammar Junior School’s pupils came first in the Years 3 and 4 category for his poem entry at the Ilkley Literature Festival. We’re very proud of this achievement. With dozens of fantastic entries to chose from, the judges of the 2017 Children’s Poetry Competition were blown away by the quality of writing, making picking the winners a very difficult task indeed!

My Space Odyssey
Whooshing through space in a big, red rocket,
Nervously, I felt something sticky in my pocket.
I reached inside to find a lolly,
It must have been snuck in by my Great Aunt Polly!
As I entered the thin atmosphere of Mercury,
There was something in the air that felt quite murky.
Next I hopped along to Venus, the planet,
Where I found some acid, like the tongue of our neighbour Janet!
Next up, I visited the planet of Mars,
Where I found some aliens driving cars!
I moved one along, to the planet Jupiter.
There I found a great red spot almost as big as Uncle Lucifer’s!
As I flew, into Saturn,
I saw at the poles, a luminous hexagonal pattern.
The sixth planet of my odyssey, was Uranus,
This was a strange planet fallen on its side, just like my cousin Rufus!
On Neptune I found the Great Dark Spot,
Which was anything but hot.
Pluto was the last stop on my list,
It’s peachy, red heart could not be missed.
As we flew back through the atmosphere of Earth,
I heard the bells clang from the famous Bell Tower of Perth.
What an adventure, was my space odyssey,
Although I am tired, I’d go again, honestly!
