Three athletics stars proved successful off, as well as on, the field today when they scored outstanding grades across the board in their A Levels.
The trio, all students at Bradford Grammar School (BGS) included Team GB runners Rebecca F and Amelie L and triathlete, Ben H, who is a member of the Yorkshire Triathlon Academy.
Rebecca and Amelie, both 18, have won medals, including golds, across the world competing for England and Team GB.
Rebecca, who won the Under 20 World Mountain Running Championships in 2023, was delighted with her top grades today – four A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History – which secured her place at Oxford University to study Biochemistry.
Said Rebecca, of Menston: “I’m so happy with my results and relieved I’m going to be going to Oxford. It’s been busy juggling sport and my studies but being able to go running while revising for exams really helped clear my mind, so I didn’t get overwhelmed. The school also did a great job in preparing me for my Oxbridge interviews.”
Amelie, of Ilkley, received two A* in Biology and Geography and an A in Chemistry. The teenager, who won team silver in the European U20 Mountain Running Championships earlier this year and will run for England in September, will be taking a gap year to focus on her running before studying Biological Sciences at Durham University.
Said Amelie: “I’m so happy I’ve got into Durham. I worked really hard, and I don’t think I could have done any more. It was tough balancing running with my studies and I’m looking forward to focusing on my running more abroad in my gap year. I’ve really loved my time at BGS and I’ll be sad to leave!”
Ben, 17, of Horsforth, also gained two A*s and an A and will be taking a gap year before heading to Loughborough University to study Sports Technology. Ben enjoyed using BGS’s on-site swimming pool for two hours before school every day and during his time with the Yorkshire Triathlon Academy he’s had support from Olympians Jonny and Alistair Brownlee, who both attended Bradford Grammar School.
Said Ben: “It’s really good how the Brownlees give back to the next generation. They’re very humble and down to earth which is nice to see. My training has been going well and although I’ve had some injury hopefully next year I’ll continue to improve. Loughborough has a really good triathlon programme so I’m looking forward to progressing there.”
Dr Simon Hinchliffe, Headmaster at Bradford Grammar School, said: “Rebecca, Amelie and Ben have spent hours dedicated to their chosen sports while balancing their academic ambitions. They’re an inspiration to all our pupils who are looking to get the most out of BGS co-curricular life, whether that’s sport, music or art. Well done to them all.”
