A team of four Bradford Grammar School pupils has surpassed 274 teams to advance to the finals of a national cybersecurity competition.

In a school first for the girls’ category, Year 11 pupils Ruqaiyah A, Eliza S, Eloise B, and Fiona L have earned their place in the CyberCenturion National Finals, following a successful previous two rounds.

To reach this position in the annual competition, the girls had to work against the clock in two live, virtual rounds to secure a range of simulated computer environments. From potential malware to poor security policies, the team combined their knowledge and research skills to identify security vulnerabilities and apply their solutions before the time elapsed.

Despite the team’s previous success as the CyberFirst Girls North of England champions in 2021, the pressure remains palpable as they prepare for the final showdown. Said Eliza: “After just missing out on the grand prize of CyberFirst, we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in the CyberCenturion finals, making lasting memories whilst showcasing our cybersecurity skills on a national stage. Win or lose, the journey is proof of our growth; we’re proud to be representing BGS and grateful to everyone who helped us achieve this feat.”

Nadeem Asghar, Head of Computer Science at Bradford Grammar School, commended the girls for their remarkable progress and dedication.

“Witnessing the exceptional growth and dedication of our pupils, like Ruqaiyah, Eliza, Eloise and Fiona fills me with immense pride,” he said. “Their journey to the CyberCenturion National Finals is a testament to their hard work and the solid foundation provided by our curriculum and co-curricular programme. Regardless of the result, they’ve achieved great heights and continue to inspire others in the field of cybersecurity.”

The final round will take place in April at MediaCity in Salford, where the girls will tackle more intricate cyber challenges, as well as doing them live against the other finalists.

CyberCenturion, a national cyber education initiative for 12-18-year-olds in the UK and UK overseas territories, is sponsored by Northrop Grumman. It serves to excite, educate and motivate students to pursue further education and careers in STEM and cybersecurity.
