A talented Cross Country team from Bradford Grammar School (BGS) is celebrating after winning Student Team of the Year in the Bradford Sports Awards.

The Junior Girls’ team, which includes Rebecca Flaherty, Martha Jackson, Amelie Lane, Phoebe Midgley, Elizabeth Gibbins and Eleanor Dawson, had done their school proud by taking a silver medal in the English Schools’ Cross Country Final. The girls are all in Years 7 and 8.

Lead Teacher for Cross Country, Mike McCartney, said: “The girls are amazing. They all give their absolute best – a display of true Yorkshire grit! It is approaching 20 years since Bradford Grammar went fully co-educational, and so to have girls’ teams win a Bradford Sports Awards for the first time in the school’s history is a fantastic achievement.”

The award came as former languages teacher Tony Kingham won a Special Recognition award for having shared his infectious passion for running with young people for many years. Running the Bradford Schools Athletics Association, he has organised, arranged and marshalled a cross-country league that regularly has more than 400 children involving schools from across the district. The event has enabled athletes to achieve significant regional and national success.

Dr Simon Hinchliffe, Headmaster, said: “The Junior Girls’ team has shown true Bradford Grammar spirit and we’re so delighted and immensely proud that they’ve won this award. Our congratulations also go to Tony Kingham for his richly deserved recognition.

“Tony was a wonderful teacher of French and Spanish at BGS, an inspirational running coach, and a greatly respected Form Teacher.”

BGS, which also counts Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonny Brownlee among its prestigious alumni, is undergoing a £4m investment in its sports facilities. It has also brought in several new sports names as part of the redevelopment, with a wealth of experience, from ex professionals and internationals to national league and age group international athletes who have represented Team GB.

“The Junior Girls’ team has shown true Bradford Grammar spirit and we’re so delighted and immensely proud that they’ve won this award. Our congratulations also go to Tony Kingham for his richly deserved recognition.  Tony was a wonderful teacher of French and Spanish at BGS, an inspirational running coach, and a greatly respected Form Teacher.”
