BGS pupil, Rebecca Clynes, 14, from Leeds, is set to become a future sporting star. She will be competing at the European Youth Olympics in Hungary in July, as part of the Győr 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF).
The Festival sees a total of 50 British athletes compete alongside around 3,000 athletes from 50 European nations come together to compete across 10 Olympic sports from 23 to 29 July.
Rebecca said: “It was a big surprise to be selected to swim for Team GB; I’m really excited to be competing in Hungary this summer. All of those morning training sessions really paid off.”
Rebecca trains two hours every morning, alongside her academic studies, and recently qualified for the junior women’s final ages 14-17 in the 200m breaststroke at the British Swimming Championships 2017. She also competed in the Welsh Nationals winning an abundance of medals.
These included five gold medals in 100m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 50m breaststroke, 400m individual medley, two silver medals 100m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, and a bronze medal for a relay.
Team GB’s athletes, who will all be aged 14 to 17, will compete in six of those; canoe sprint (six athletes), cycling (six), gymnastics (six), judo (12), swimming (16) and tennis (four). Athletics, basketball, handball and volleyball complete the sporting programme in Hungary.
With many athletes already working on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, EYOFs play an important role in the development of young British athletes, helping them along the route to achieving their own Olympic dreams.
They provide crucial multi-sport event experience for young athletes, with over 50 athletes graduating from a summer EYOF with Team GB going on to compete at the Beijing 2008, London 2012 or Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The likes of Becky Adlington, Pete Kennaugh, Sally Conway and Nile Wilson all had their first taste of an Olympic-style event at an EYOF before winning an Olympic medal at senior level.
