Pupils and staff at a Bradford school were celebrating higher GCSE grades than pre-pandemic levels today with almost three quarters of grades awarded being 7-9 (previously A-A*).

More than half (52 per cent) of the GCSE grades at Bradford Grammar School (BGS) were 8-9s compared with 47 per cent in 2019, pre the COVID pandemic. Likewise, 94 per cent of the grades awarded were 5-9 today, compared with 92 per cent in 2019.

Nationally, the grading was widely seen to be tougher this year with pupils warned to expect 300,000 fewer top grades.

Dr Simon Hinchliffe, headmaster at BGS, said: “We’re really pleased that we’ve outperformed all our 2019 results.

“These pupils had to endure a great deal during COVID and they were in Years 8 and 9 when the pandemic hit, which lays a foundation for GCSEs. I’m delighted for them that their positive attitude and hard work has come good. It’s also a reflection of the BGS remote education they received throughout the pandemic that they’ve gone on to achieve such terrific results.

“The pupils who do well in sports, the arts and other wider pursuits at BGS have also shown that they can excel academically here. It clearly demonstrates that with the right support, such as we have at BGS, you can thrive inside and outside of the classroom without compromise.”
