Bradford Grammar School (BGS) students were celebrating today after securing top grades in their GCSEs.

Students at BGS take a mixture of IGCSEs and GCSEs, graded 9 to 1. This year, 56 per cent were awarded 9-8, while 79 per cent achieved 9-7 (equivalent to A and above under the ‘old’ system) and 100 per cent 9-4 (once C and above). 23 students achieved a clean sweep of grades 9-8.

Headmaster of BGS, Dr Simon Hinchliffe, said: “We’re extremely proud of our students and their achievements and today is chance to celebrate their hard work and determination. It is also an opportunity to applaud the resilience and fortitude they have shown during the most unusual of school years. They have demonstrated tremendous commitment to their studies and despite being socially distanced, have supported one another brilliantly. The BGS ethos is not just about academic results, and this year more than ever has proven the power of a well-rounded education to foster a strong character, sense of decency and kindness, and genuine sense of community.

We have been delighted to welcome so many students back to school to collect their results today with their friends, family and staff outside on our Governors’ Lawn. We look forward to welcoming them back to BGS for a socially distanced start to Autumn Term this September.”

BGS counts Olympic medallists, prominent artists and politicians among its prestigious alumni. Former pupils of the independent school on Keighley Road, Bradford, include Olympic heroes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, artist David Hockney and politician Denis Healey.
