A talented singer and cellist from Bradford Grammar School (BGS) has received a bursary to attend the largest specialist music school in the UK.

Lydia Crabtree will be heading to Chetham’s School of Music, in Manchester, after successfully undergoing an extensive musical audition earlier this year.

Lydia, of Cullingworth, was awarded her place thanks to a bursary from the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme. It came as she was delighted to receive five 9s, five 8s and one 7 in her GCSE results yesterday.

“It was amazing to receive the email saying I’d got in. I’m really looking forward to going there as it’s such a prestigious school,” said Lydia.

The teenager, who has recently undertaken her Grade 8 in cello and voice, started playing the cello when she was in Year 2 and said she had loved being part of all the music clubs at BGS – from orchestra to choir.

“The really good thing about the music community at BGS is that the clubs are made up of people from different year groups. There are so many musical people of a high standard and they’re very supportive of each other,” she said.

“I’ve always loved the idea of being a teacher, especially teaching one on one and helping people to progress, so, it would be great if I could have a career as a music teacher. It would be the best job.”

Elizabeth White, director of music at BGS said: “We wish Lydia all the best with her new musical adventure. Since she joined BGS in Year 7, she has dedicated herself to the music department whether that be as a member of the many school choirs, string quartet, lead singer of bands or the junior and senior orchestra. We are incredibly sad to see her go but thank her for all she has contributed to BGS and wish her all the luck in the world!”

Simon Hinchliffe, headmaster added: “We are all very proud of Lydia and her fantastic set of results. She has made an outstanding contribution to the musical life of Bradford Grammar School during her time here and I have no doubt that Lydia will make the most of her opportunity at Chetham’s. Both schools have a long and enduring history of nurturing creativity and musical excellence. As an Old Bradfordian, Lydia will always be welcome in school to share her experiences with other aspiring musicians – we can’t wait to hear about them.”
