Richard Ribeiro
The newly appointed headmaster of Bradford Grammar Junior School says he has been impressed by the adaptability and engagement of his pupils following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Richard Ribeiro has joined Bradford Grammar Junior School from his position as deputy head at Wakefield Girls’ High School Junior School and has taken over from acting headmistress Jane Disley.

Richard said he had already witnessed the spirit of the school motto, Hoc Age, meaning ‘get on and do’ in his young pupils who were adapting well to online learning.

He said: “I’m seeing how resilient and creative they are in the way that they’ve responded to this pandemic. They’ve demonstrated that they have great adaptability in embracing a new way of learning and these skills will be with them for life. They’ve got a real ‘can do’ attitude which is great to see.”

A geography graduate from Loughborough University, Richard started his career in IT service management before making the transition to teaching. He has taught in a range of settings, from a state primary to an independent boys’ school. A keen sportsman, Richard represented GB Students Rugby League at university and is keen to champion sport and music at the junior school.

He added: “I strongly believe in the value of high quality extra-curricular provision, which the junior school does so well, to allow children to explore individual interests and to develop key character qualities in a happy environment.

“I’m keen to shape an environment of opportunity, where pupils can thrive and develop their full potential. I recognise the excellent reputation of the school and I look forward to building on the rich traditions and taking the school forward.”

Dr Simon Hinchliffe, headmaster at BGS, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Richard to the senior leadership team at Bradford Grammar. He’s a knowledgeable and instinctive leader and I know he’ll make a great contribution to the future direction of the junior school and to the success of our pupils.”
