Meet Moses
YEAR 9 PUPIL – 2023/24
We caught up with young thespian, musician and sport enthusiast, Moses A, who joined BGS, along with his two younger siblings, last September.
Moses tells us about what attracted him to BGS and what he enjoys doing in and out of school.
When did you join Bradford Grammar School?
It was last September. I joined in Year 9.
And what attracted you to BGS?
What the school offers academically appealed to me and also the many other opportunities that are available. For example, at BGS I can study three separate sciences, and there’s a vast number of clubs and sports on offer.
Have you got any siblings, and do they attend BGS also?
I do. My brother is in Year 8 and my sister is at Clock House (the Junior School) in Year 6. We all joined together last year.
What subjects have you chosen next year for GCSE?
On top of the core subjects, I’ve chosen to do French, Spanish, Music and History.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy languages and I like performing. I have a very musical family – I play the drums and piano and I really enjoy acting. I also like playing different sports like football and hockey, and I enjoy cooking.
About your interest in acting. Tell us more about this – have you been in any productions we might have heard of?
So, although I joined BGS in September, it wasn’t until November that I actually came to the school ‘properly’ as I was filming the latest series of the CBBC show, ‘The Dumping Ground’ (the first episode of series 11 aired on Friday 26 January and can be viewed weekly on CBBC and BBC iPlayer).
Tell us more about the character you play.
I play one of the new characters, Jimi – he is quite energetic, messy and really likes gaming. I’m not really like my character at all – some people don’t realise that the character you’re playing isn’t who you really are!
How did you get into acting?
I’ve always enjoyed performing and from four years of age I’ve attended a local performing arts school called SCALA. Through them I’ve had the opportunity to try out for many different roles, and ‘The Dumping Ground’ has been my biggest role so far. At SCALA, we train every week to help us become better performers, which helps give us confidence in our everyday lives.
How have you settled in to BGS?
Everything has been great so far! I’ve made lots of good friends, I’m now playing hockey in the school team, and I’m enjoying my lessons and learning a lot from my teachers. I’m looking forward to taking part in more activities and school clubs now that I’m settled into the school and not filming.
What is the dream?
I’ve really enjoyed my acting work so far and I’d love to be an actor. I need to keep progressing and developing my acting skills and maybe one day I can make it to the top level! I’m also interested in justice and law and would like to study law in America one day.
Which actors do you aspire to be like or look up to?
It’s hard to name my favourites – there are so many! But I really enjoyed watching Timothée Chalamet recently in Wonka – I thought he was really well cast. I also love hearing all Eddie Murphy’s different characters’ accents in his movies – especially Donkey in Shrek, he always makes me laugh!
