Safeguarding
at Bradford Grammar School
Safeguarding our pupils
At Bradford Grammar School, we recognise that our pastoral care for every student encompasses a duty to keep them safe. We are committed to embedding safeguarding into every aspect of school life. Our students know that this is a school which values academic success but also that we care about their safety, wellbeing and happiness. BGS is proud to be a caring community which supports each and every child.
For Parents
From time to time, our pupils may face difficulties and challenges in their personal or school lives, so we make sure that all pupils know how to access support to help them manage difficulties and to develop resilience. Details of pastoral care in the Senior School can be found here and here for Junior School.
What do we mean by Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. Safeguarding means:
- taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcome;
- protecting children from maltreatment;
- preventing impairment of children’s health or development; and
- ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
Safeguarding encompasses child protection, health care plans, health and safety measures, site security, safety on school trips and in co-curricular activities, mental health, online safety, anti-bullying and much more.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All members of staff at BGS have safeguarding training at the start of each academic year and receive regular safeguarding updates throughout the year. All staff know what to look out for and how to raise a concern. We also issue every new visitor to our site with safeguarding reminders and information.
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) team meets with the Headmasters of both Junior and Senior School regularly and reports to the Governors via the School’s Safeguarding and Welfare Committee, which ensure that policies, procedures and training are kept up to date.
Our PSHE programme in the Junior School and PD programme in the Senior School educate our pupils about how to keep themselves and their friends safe, with a wide range of topics that include relationships, sex and health education, road and rail safety, mental health topics, and keeping safe online.
Our Safeguarding Policy is regularly reviewed in line with government guidance. We also review our Safer Recruitment Policy regularly to ensure that safe decisions are made concerning the suitability of any prospective employee.
Meet the BGS Safeguarding Team
If you have concerns about a child, contact a member of our safeguarding team at [email protected]. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, so please let someone know if you think a young person may need help or support.
CEOP is a command of the National Crime Agency and is dedicated to tackling the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and young people. CEOP helps children and young people under the age of 18 who have been forced or manipulated into taking part, or are being pressured to take part, in sexual activity of any kind. This can be both online and offline. The CEOP Safety Centre offers information and advice for children and young people, parents and carers and professionals. You can visit the CEOP Safety Centre and make a report directly to CEOP by clicking the Click CEOP button above. Online bullying or other online concerns should not be reported to CEOP and children and young people should be directed to speak to an adult they trust, and/or referred to Childline, if they would like to speak to someone about how they are feeling.
