Scores of schoolchildren came together to take part in an annual fun tennis challenge in Skipton.

Bradford Grammar School (BGS) teamed up with Skipton Tennis Centre (STC) to run the youth tennis challenge for the second time, following a postponement last year because of the COVID pandemic.

The event, at STC, saw more than 20 children take part in challenges across three zones covering match play, skills and multisports.

BGS headmaster, Dr Simon Hinchliffe, presented each of the participants with medals at the end of the event.

Dr Hinchliffe said: “By partnering with organisations like Skipton Tennis, we can widen participation in the sport and engage more children with our collaborative projects.

“It was wonderful to see so many happy faces enjoying tennis during the challenge, which is what it’s all about – fun.”

BGS has worked in close partnership with STC for more than two years. The school has its own specialist coach in tennis, Ben Crichton, who has experience working within the regional training structure for the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) North East Performance and is the Under 9s captain for Yorkshire LTA. There are many opportunities for children at local schools to use BGS’s sports facilities and the school has an extensive sports outreach programme.

Adam Cox, head coach at STC, said he takes great pride in instilling a love of tennis in the hundreds of children who come to the centre.

He said: “We’re keen to ensure that tennis is inclusive and accessible for people of all ages and abilities and the annual BGS challenge is a great way to encourage young people while still having that all essential fun! Congratulations to everyone who took part.”
