Music lessons

Over 350 instrumental lessons a week are taught by our team of exceptional visiting instrumental teachers across the Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form.

The Music department at Bradford Grammar School offers individual tuition in Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion, Drum Kit, Singing, Saxophone, Recorder, Piano, Keyboard, Organ, Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitar and ABRSM Music Theory.

Students will have thirty-one lessons scheduled, of twenty minutes each, per year. Because of the varying lengths of the terms and disruption caused to the timetable due to examinations or trips, instrumental staff generally provide more lessons in the Autumn or Spring terms, and fewer in the Summer.

The cost of lessons is in the region of £150 per term. Our visiting instrumental teachers are self-employed, consequently communication regarding your child’s lessons should be made directly with them. Parents are invoiced by the instrumental teacher and payment should be made to them promptly. Extra lessons may be given at the teacher’s discretion if a pupil is preparing for an Associated Board or Trinity Guildhall Examination or a performance at a concert or competitive festival. These lessons are invoiced separately. Requests for lessons 30 to 40 minutes in length can often be accommodated, these should be negotiated with the instrumental teacher.

Pupils in Years 2 – 11 receive their tuition on a rotational basis; consequently, they are required to miss half of a different academic lesson every week to attend their individual music lesson. Sixth Form pupils are supported, where possible, to schedule their lessons before school, during free periods, during the lunch break or after school.

Application form

  • It is your responsibility to inform your child’s instrumental tutor of any planned absences at least a week in advance. The instrumental teachers may be unable to reschedule lessons missed for any reason, including planned absence, and therefore have no obligation to do so. Your child is expected to practice regularly on their instrument in order to support their progress. Your child requires an instrument on which they can practice at home. We have links with and can recommend Windstruments (www.windstruments.co.uk/sales-rentals/rentals) and GSG Pianos (www.gsgpianos.co.uk).
