Table tennis captain Anees K was named the North East Young Volunteer of the Year at the Pride of Table Tennis Awards in recognition of his dedication to both playing and giving back to the sport.

Year 8 pupil Anees first picked up a paddle in Year 4 during a lunchtime club led by Mr. Crabtree, whose mentorship ignited his passion for table tennis. Now captain of BGS’s U13 table tennis team, Anees has become a driving force within the sport, balancing his schoolwork with training and volunteering at Baildon Table Tennis Club, part of the Bradford Table Tennis League.

His volunteer work goes far beyond assisting with training sessions – Anees plays a vital role in supporting players of all abilities, ensuring sessions run smoothly and last year helped at the Bradford Bronte Rotary Disability Games. There, he worked with less able-bodied participants, teaching them table tennis skills, an experience he described as ‘incredibly rewarding’.

Speaking about his award, Anees said: “It’s an honour and has really boosted my confidence. I just enjoy helping others.”

Anees’ mother, Noreen, added: “Bradford Grammar School has played a crucial role in nurturing his talent, providing him with opportunities to grow both as a player and a volunteer. To know that my son understands the value and impact of volunteering at this young age will set him in good stead for his personal growth in the future.”

Looking ahead, Anees aspires to play table tennis at a county or national level while pursuing his dream of becoming a pilot.

Headmaster Dr Simon Hinchliffe said: “Anees’ story is a reminder that success isn’t just about personal achievement — it’s about lifting others along the way. His dedication to both his sport and his community reflects the values we champion at BGS.”

“I just enjoy helping others.”
