Follow your passions and don’t give up, were two of the messages one of Britain’s leading athletes gave to young pupils at his former school.

Emile Cairess, who holds the European 10-mile record and has clocked the third fastest British marathon time ever recorded, returned to Bradford Grammar Junior School where he gave a speech to pupils at their annual Prize Giving ceremony.

He told them: “There was something about running and racing for me that gave me a feeling I couldn’t replicate elsewhere at school. At a young age, it’s important to explore many avenues and let things develop naturally. I’ve succeeded because of my love of the sport and my dedication.

“I would encourage all of you to follow your passions and choose your own dreams. Use your early years to try everything you can and find out what you’re passionate about.”

Emile grew up running around the streets of Saltaire, Bradford from the age of four with his mum Alison. The athlete turned professional in January 2020 and now lives in Meanwood, Leeds. One of his career highlights was in April when he beat Sir Mo Farah in the London Marathon, coming sixth overall with a time of 2:08:07. He has since qualified to run the marathon in the Olympics, in Paris, next year.

Emile left Bradford Grammar in 2016 before studying for a sports science degree at St Mary’s College, London. During his visit to the school, he also met with senior school pupils, including Rebecca Flaherty and Amelie Lane, who recently won gold medals for Team GB in the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.

He added: “It wasn’t so long ago I was sitting in the Junior School Prize Giving ceremony myself, so it’s good to be back.”

Richard Ribeiro, headmaster at the Junior School, said: “We’re truly grateful that Emile has taken time out of his busy training schedule to join us. His speech was very inspirational to our pupils and it was lovely to have him back in school.”

“Use your early years to try everything you can and find out what you’re passionate about.”
