Year 8 pupil raises £3,200 for hospice in memory of grandfather and wins flight in OB’s gyrocopter

Nicky W has raised an impressive £3,200 for Manorlands Hospice in memory of his late grandfather, Graham Staines.

The Year 8 pupil at Bradford Grammar School took on the ‘Zip the Cow’ challenge – a daring zip wire ride from the top of the iconic Cow and Calf Rocks above Ilkley, descending 270 metres down Ilkley Moor at speeds of up to 35mph.

When asked about his inspiration for the fundraiser, Nicky said: “My grandpa was really nice and supportive. He passed away at Manorlands Hospice, and they were so kind to him. I wanted to do something to help them.”

Supported by family, friends and the local community, the 12-year-old’s fundraising efforts earned him the title of Top Fundraiser at the event, which was staged by healthcare and bereavement charity Sue Ryder. His achievement was rewarded with a ride in a gyrocopter, flown by Old Bradfordian Robin Wright.

“It was really exciting,” said Nicky. “I’m not scared of heights, so I enjoyed every minute of it!”

Nicky, from Keighley, is already planning his next challenge. He has signed up for the Sue Ryder Manorlands PaintRush 2025, a 5km colour run on Father’s Day next year.

“I think my grandpa would have been proud of me,” Nicky added. “It feels good to give back.”
